Do you talk with your animal companions? If you do, you’re not alone and it’s not weird! Lots of people do and it’s actually a great way to connect, as the animals we share our lives with often love to hear the sounds of our voices. My daughter used to sit with our dog Tilly in her bed and read to her, Tilly absolutely loved it! Sometimes she would snooze or just watch my daughter through soft eyes in a relaxed state, soaking up the gentle energies of the moment. All in all, both my daughter and Tilly both enjoyed the experience and it definitely helped deepen their connection.
Some of my clients have told me that they sing to their animals, which is just beautiful too and I’ve also seen animals respond with curiosity and gentleness to a human playing a musical instrument.
Often, Animals can tell from your tone, intonation, or the vibes you give off when you’re talking with them what you actually mean. They don’t always understand the words, but they do find a way of understanding us don’t you think?
So that’s all good one way communication, but do you also listen to what your animal companion has to say to you? Perhaps you watch for their body language which can tell us some information, but do you hear or feel what they’re telling you?
We all know that communication between two humans is much more effective when it’s two way i.e. where sender and receiver invite and offer feedback and it’s similar with animals. If you take the time to listen to what your animal might be trying to tell you, you might be surprised as to what information you can receive and how enriching it can be for both of your lives.
You might be laughing at my apparent stupidity at this point but bear with me! Have you ever paused to see how your animal might respond to your question? You might try by starting with a simple question like, ‘Did you enjoy your dinner?’ If you’re quiet and patient, you might hear a word or a few words in your own mind or you might get a sense from your gut or intuition of a yes or a no.
If you’re really connected deeply with your animal companion, you may even notice you receive messages via your senses, or through your own body. It could be you ask your horse what their favourite food is and you get the smell of sugar beet! Actually, this did happen to me, how incredible it is to receive information in this way. Or it could be you sit quietly with your animal and ask them to tell you where they might be experiencing pain. If you’re very tuned into your own body and have a clear mind, it is possible to receive the answer via your body. When I’m communicating with an animal, I often receive information in this way e.g. a dog showing me pain in the front left paw and I feel pain or a sensation in my left hand. When you pause, check it’s not your pain and with experience, you can begin to discern when information coming in is your animal friend communicating with you.
I would hazard a guess that many people who share their lives with animals do hear what they may be telling them without even realising it. To start with, it’s likely that you may not trust what you receive and that’s normal. It’s easy to put it down to our own mind or an overactive imagination playing games with us. However, I can guarantee that with a bit of practice and some help from your animal friends, you will learn to trust yourself and you will reap the rewards!
Perhaps you might have a go at communicating with an animal companion, let them know that you’re learning and that you’d like to be able to hear what they want to share with you. Most animals are really grateful and they usually have lots to tell us when we give them an opportunity to have their voice.
